島根県のほぼ中央部にある、大田市に建設された道の駅である。大田市内初の大型木造公共施設で、名前の「ごいせ」はこの地域の方言で「いらっしゃいませ」を意味する。計画地一帯は世界遺産石見銀山遺跡のバッファゾーンに該当するため、計画段階から景観審議会との協議を経るなど良好な景観計画が求められた。山間に東西に伸びた敷地形状に沿って建物を配置し、物販・管理棟、レストラン棟、ステージ棟の3棟の主要建物が並ぶ。また、それらをつなぐ屋根通路や付属施設の他、バス停、RVパークやドッグランなど、地域の利用、観光客の利用の両方に対応している。建物自体も大田市の材料・技術でつくり、道の駅で販売される商品や食とあわせて、「大田市を発信する新たなショールーム」となることを目指した。
　物販・管理棟とレストラン棟は、上空から見ると緩やかな円弧状としている。2棟の中央部分にはふところのある屋外空間をつくり、イベント時に多目的に使える広場としている。また、石州瓦葺きの屋根に緩やかなむくりをつけることで、円弧状の建物の中央部が凹んで見えないような視覚補正している。設計段階から瓦業者と打合せを重ね、特注瓦ではなく標準品の瓦を使い、重ね代を調整しながら通常のやり方で葺くことでこの形状を実現した。伸びやかな瓦屋根が描くラインで、周辺の山並みと調和する景観となった。
　建物に活用する木材は、構造材をはじめ、造作材・内外部仕上材など、使用する大部分が大田市有林から切り出した杉材を利用している。切出しを行う山の選定から設計がはじまり、樹種・本数調査、伐採、製材、保管、乾燥、強度試験など一貫してコーディネートを行っている。構造材には県外での加工を要する集成材は使用せず、全て杉の製材を採用している。接合部の加工も、地元プレカットと地元大工の手刻みで可能な架構とし、あくまで地場での流通・技術で実現できる計画とした。架構はテンションを使った張弦梁を採用し、出来るだけシンプルな木造空間としている。
　ステージ棟の舞台には、令和3年に三瓶山で開催された「第71回全国植樹祭」のお野立所を移設して再活用し、石見神楽の公演などを発信する場となっている。この道の駅が、地域にとっての観光拠点、文化発信の拠点となるとともに、木材を有効利用のためのモデル事業として、循環型林業、木材振興、ウッドチェンジに寄与することを期待している。

　This roadside station was built in Oda City, which is located almost in the center of Shimane Prefecture. It is the first large wooden public building in Oda City, and the name “Goise” means “welcome” in the local dialect. The site is in the buffer zone of the World Heritage Site “Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine,” so good landscape planning was required. The Landscape Council was consulted from the planning stage. The buildings are arranged along the shape of the site, which stretches east to west in the mountains. The three main buildings—the shop and office building, restaurant building, and event stage—are lined up in a row. In addition to the roofed walkways and auxiliary facilities that connect them, there is also a bus stop, RV park, and dog run that serve both regional and tourist use. The buildings were built using materials and skills from Oda City, and the products and food sold at the roadside station aim to show off Oda City’s best features.
　The shop and office building and the restaurant building are designed to form a gentle arc when viewed from above. The two buildings have a central part with a spacious outdoor area that can be used for different things during events. The roof is covered in ‘Sekishu’ tiles, and its gently curved shape visually corrects the concave appearance of the central part of the arc-shaped building. The shape was achieved by working closely with the tile manufacturer from the design stage, using standard tiles rather than custom-made ones, and adjusting the overlap while roofing in the usual way. The line of the expansive tile roof blends in with the surrounding mountains.
　Most of the wood used to build the structure came from Oda City’s own forests. This wood was used for everything from the structure’s frame to its interior and exterior finishes. The design process began with the selection of the forest, and the project was coordinated from start to finish. This included surveying the tree species and number of trees, logging, processing the timber, storing it, drying it, and testing its strength. We didn’t use laminated timber, which needs to be processed outside the prefecture. We used sawn cedar for all the timber. The structure was designed to be built using local materials and carpenters. The plan was to use local distribution and skills to the greatest extent possible. The structure uses tensioned arch beams to create a simple wooden space.
　The event stage from the 71st National Tree Planting Ceremony in 2021 at Mt. Sanbe is being used for performances of “Iwami Kagura” and other events. We hope that this roadside station will become a base for tourism and cultural dissemination for the area. We also hope that it will contribute to recycling-oriented forestry, wood promotion, and “wood change” as a model project for the effective use of timber.
